Westover Christian and Hargrave Military soccer teams went back and forth on scorching Thursday afternoon, battling to a 2-2 draw.

Senior captain Justin Oakes scored Westover’s first goal when he connected with junior Matthew Moore in the first half. Oakes then tallied his second goal of the day in the second half off an assist from eighth-grader Keeley Bettendorf.

Sophomore defender Luke Barber also came up big for the Bulldogs when he headed away a Hargrave shot that nearly went for goal. Ashton Bettendorf recorded several saves for Westover in goal, as well.

Westover had several chances and shots on goal during the final minutes of the second half but was not able to finish.

Hargrave has owned the series lately, beating Westover in every meeting since 2013. The teams battled to another tie that season. WCA has not earned a win in the series since 2001.

Westover moves to 9-3-1 and 6-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs face Roanoke Valley Christian on Monday.
