The Albemarle boys lacrosse team held Mountain View to two first-half goals en route to a 12-6 win in the Region 5D championship game on Wednesday night in Fredericksburg.
The Patriots’ defense was stellar throughout much of the game. AHS limited Mountain View to just one goal in both the first quarter and second quarter, then held the Wildcats scoreless in the third quarter. Albemarle limited Mountain View to 13 shots on goal, and Matthew Willis had seven saves between the pipes for the Patriots.
Leading 2-1 after the first quarter, Albemarle outscored Mountain View 4-1 in the second to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. The Patriots continued to pull away after the break, outscoring the Wildcats 3-0 in the third quarter to take a commanding 9-2 advantage heading into the final stanza.
Andrew Scanlon had five goals and two assists to lead Albemarle. Timmy Myers finished with three goals and an assist, and Cooper Cramer chipped in two goals and one assist for the Patriots. Lucas Rambo and Eb McCarthy had one goal each for AHS, while Forrest Warner and Alec Kelly each tallied two assists.
Albemarle will host Region 5C runner up John Champe on Friday.
Madison walks off with state berth
Bailey Smith hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning to propel the Madison County softball team to a 3-2 victory over Buffalo Gap in the Region 2B semifinals on Wednesday. The win secures a trip to the Class 2 state tournament for the third straight year for the Mountaineers, but the Bison made them earn it.
After Buffalo Gap took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the first inning, Madison tied the game on a Sophie Adams sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Bison took the lead again in the fifth and again Adams had the answer for MCHS with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 and set up Smith’s extra-inning heroics.
Western sweeps 3C singles, doubles
Western Albemarle had a strong showing at the Region 3C singles and doubles tournament, sweeping both boys and girls championships.
Western’s Gavin Segraves, the defending Class 3 state singles champion, defeated Monticello’s Andrew Watson in straight sets to singles final. He then teamed up with Alex Ix to win the regional doubles title in straight sets.
Fellow Warrior Corinne Jennings also captured a pair of regional titles on Wednesday. Jennings defeated Joyce Mac of Brookville, 6-2, 6-1 to claim the singles title, then paired with Austin Winslow to win the regional doubles crown in straight sets.
