Southside needs Ruff in the Senate
To the editor:
On June 11, Republicans in Southside Virginia, including in Pittsylvania County, will be voting for our Republican candidate for the State Senate. Turnout is expected to be low, so it is essential for Republicans, especially in Pittsylvania County, to vote on June 11. In this primary, there are two candidates running for the Republican nomination. On June 11, I will be supporting my friend Frank Ruff for the Republican nomination.
I have been constantly amazed with Sen. Ruff’s work ethic and genuine desire to help his constituents, especially with a district that stretches from Pittsylvania County to Prince George County, the largest in Virginia. He is the type of legislator who likes to accomplish things rather than seeking the limelight.
As a senator, Ruff has instituted workforce development initiatives, worked to expand broadband services in rural areas, protected your Second Amendment rights, fought to protect all war monuments and memorials (HB 587), advocated for the right for farmers to grow commercial hemp and helped shepherd funding for an alternative study to fix both Cherrystone and Roaring Fork Dams near Chatham.
Much of these accomplishments were made possible due to Ruff’s positions as a member of the Senate Finance Committee, a budget conferee (legislator who negotiates the final budget) and as vice chairman of the Tobacco Commission. As vice chairman of the Tobacco Commission, Ruff was instrumental in making sure that growers were compensated for loss of quota at a time when they were most at risk and also providing young people with financial assistance to go to college or trade school.
If Ruff were to lose the primary election on June 11, Southside Virginia would lose its only senator on the Senate Finance Committee and would lose its only state legislator (both House of Delegates and Senate) on the 12-member budget conference committee. In addition, Southside Virginia would lose an important position on the Tobacco Commission, something that our region cannot afford. Ruff’s reelection will ensure there will be a voice for our region and its diverse needs.
I hope that you will vote for Frank Ruff on June 11 at your regular polling place as we need him back in the Senate. Ruff is a champion for Southside Virginia!
