Bertha B. Short-Tate, 90, formerly of 108 Harris Place and 229 Bel Air Drive, Danville, Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Saturday, July 6, 2019. Bertha was born in Danville, on April 4, 1929, a daughter of the late Thomas O. and Ellen M. Biggs. She lived all of her life in Danville and had retired from Dan River Mills, where she had worked in the sewing room for fifty two years. She was a faithful member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church and played the piano for her Sunday school class, was active in the Lunch Bunch, and visited various nursing homes in Danville to sing and play music for the residents. Along with her family, playing the piano was one of the loves of her life and she loved to entertain when friends came to visit, at church, etc. Bertha was married to the late James P. Short Sr. who predeceased her on June 12, 1999, and she later remarried the late Nelson O. Tate. Bertha is survived by her two sons, James P. Short Jr. (Donna) of Indian Trail, N.C., and Terry L. Short (Debbie) of Fort Mill, S.C.; a brother, Douglas Biggs (Ina) of Valrico, Fla.; five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. A visitation for friends and family is being held at Swicegood-Barker Funeral Home, 564 W. Main Street, Danville, Va., on Tuesday, July 09, 2019 from 6 until 7:30 p.m. and a funeral service is being conducted by the Reverend Myron Bruce at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens on route 58W. The family would like to express its appreciation to the Brookdale Assisted Living facility in Danville and the Brookdale-Southpark Memory Care facility in Charlotte, N.C. for their care over the last three years.
