Edwin Randolph Shields, age 88, of 1284 Pleasant Gap Drive, Dry Fork, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, June 3, 2019. He was born on September 12, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, Va., to the late James Frank Shields and the late Eva Mills Shields. Edwin was married to Joan Easley Shields for 63 years, who survives of the residence. Mr. Shields farmed most of his life and was passionate about serving his community. Throughout the years he served on the board of directors for The Mount Hermon Volunteer Fire Department, was currently serving on the board of directors for White Oak Community Center and was a former President of the Young Farmer Association of Pittsylvania County, as well as a 50 year member of Carter Lodge #323, A.F.&A.M. He also served on the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors for 19 years. For his dedication and service to Pittsylvania County for years of service he was honored by the Board of Supervisors naming part of the courthouse, The Edwin R. Shields Court House Addition in Chatham, Va. He loved to watch sports, play golf, hunt, spend time with his friends at the cabin and enjoyed spending time with his family. Throughout his life he held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those who surrounded him. Edwin was a devoted member of Oakland United Methodist Church for over 65 years where he was a member of the choir. He served on the Administrative Council Board at Oakland for 49 years. In addition to his wife, Edwin is survived by two sons, Denny M. Shields (Karen) and Bryan K. Shields (Wendy), all of Dry Fork, Va.; and grandchildren, James Shields, Tyler Shields, and Rebecca Shields. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Curtis Shields, Dale Shields, and Richard Shields. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at 10 a.m. at Oakland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jon Woodburn, the Rev. Edward Pope, and the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Family at other times will be at the residence. Interment will follow the service at Oakland United Methodist Church, Cemetery, in Blairs, Va.
