On Sunday, October 20, 2019, Wade Crawford "WC" Scruggs Jr., 73, formerly of Gretna, Va., passed away peacefully at Transitions Hospice Home in Raleigh, N.C., following a prolonged illness from Parkinson's Disease. WC was born on October 9, 1946, in Altavista, Va., to Wade Crawford Scruggs and Effie Shelton Scruggs. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Nan Byrd Scruggs; and beloved children, Brandon Wade Scruggs and Shelley Scruggs Hancox, all of Wake Forest, N.C. WC is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Jenny Scruggs; son-in-law, Matt Hancox; and three precious grandchildren, Miles Hancox, Sadie Hancox, and Reagan Scruggs. He leaves behind his loving sister, Deborah Jefferson; brothers-in-law, Dwight Jefferson and David Knight; and sisters-in-law, Elna Scruggs, Eloise Scruggs, and Phyllis Knight. He was predeceased by two brothers Carroll Scruggs and Berkley "Bob" Scruggs; sister, Betty Toler; brothers-in-law, Roy Byrd Jr. and Wesley Toler; and sister-in-law, Lois Byrd. Many generations of nieces and nephews survive him. Nieces include Wendy Davidson, Kim McCarthy, and Mary Ann Martin. Nephews are Kenneth Scruggs, Keith Scruggs, Tom Scruggs, Jim Scruggs, John Scruggs, Skip Toler, Michael Jefferson, Aaron Byrd, and Alan Knight. Niece Pam Rowland predeceased him. WC graduated from Gretna High School in 1965 where he excelled in basketball, football, and track. He received a full football scholarship to Hamden-Sydney College. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Hampden-Sydney in 1969, and a master's degree in education from Lynchburg College in 1971. Upon graduation, he began a 30-year career in education. He was an English teacher and coach at Gretna Jr High School for one year and at Gretna High School for five years, Assistant Principal at Tunstall High School 1975-1981, Principal of Dan River High School 1981-1985, and Principal of Gretna High School 1985-1999. Following his retirement from education, he worked as an Office Manager for English Construction in Lynchburg, Va. for six years. WC was a dedicated and respected community leader. He was the founder, director, and lifetime trustee of the Richard Ramsey Scholarship Fund, served on the Board of Directors for RGG (Revitalization for Greater Gretna), served as President and Treasurer on the Board of Directors for Cedars Country Club, was an active member of the Gretna Lions Club, Gretna Jaycees, and Gretna First Baptist Church, and served on the Virginia High School League Executive Committee. WC loved his family, his friends, the game of golf, and a good card game. He enjoyed playing golf with his many friends his entire adult life at Cedars Country Club in Gretna, Va. He proudly managed to play 194 rounds of golf at Heritage Country Club in Wake Forest, N.C. the year before he passed. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be on Wednesday October 23, 2019, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Gretna, 502 S Main St., Gretna VA 24557, with the Reverend Bob Ballance and the Reverend R.G. Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Colbert Moran Funeral Home, 307 N. Main St., Gretna VA 24557.
