Marie Whitehead Scearce of Florence, Alabama, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 22, 2019. She was 84. Born on August 12, 1935, in Danville, Virginia, Marie was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was affectionately known as Gaga by a multitude of people, a term of endearment bestowed by her adoring granddaughter. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church. A homemaker of the highest order, Marie was esteemed as a wonderful cook who excelled with baked goods and delicious sweet treats. She loved entertaining and watching sports (especially baseball); she was a loyal fan of the Texas Rangers. Gaga spent the last 15 or so years living with her daughter and her family in Texas, Oklahoma, and finally Alabama (the native state of her father); she cherished their time together. She loved meeting new people and developed numerous lasting friendships. She had a dynamic personality, a quick wit, a beautiful smile, and always a twinkle in her eyes. Truly interested in other people, Marie was a beloved personality of those she met. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Grace Whitehead; her husband, Leland Jackson Scearce, all of Danville, Virginia; and her sister, Evelyn Salem of Cleveland, Ohio. She is survived by her daughter, Shelley Goss (Don); granddaughter, Kristen Goss; brother, Edward Whitehead (Frances); sister, Gay Wilson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank the staff of Encompass Healthcare and Hospice for the love, respect, and excellent care provided. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in Danville, Virginia.
