John Thomas Payne, 92, of 234 April Lane, Danville, Va., died on Sunday, November 24, 2019, at his residence after being in declining health for several years. Mr. Payne was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., on February 12, 1927, son of the late John S. Payne and Lucy Boles Payne. He spent all of his life in the Danville area where he worked as a truck driver for McLean Trucking Co. until his retirement. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Mr. Payne loved the outdoors and enjoyed farming, fishing and camping. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents; brother, Morris Payne; sister, Nancy Burnette; and his wife, Frances Odell Payne who died on March 4, 1992, predeceased him. Survivors include, children, Jimmie Payne (Joyce), Brenda Haraway (Tim), Richard Payne, Pamela Bradley and Timothy Payne; brother, Jerry Payne; sisters, Katherine Rigney and Dorothy Walton; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 1 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Richard Berkley officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 until 1 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times will be at the residence, 234 April Lane, Danville, VA 24540.
