Mrs. Mattie L. Mayo, 95, of Java, Virginia, departed this life on Sunday morning, November 17, 2019, at her residence. Born on March 16, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late John Lanier and Fannie Barksdale Lanier. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bose Mayo; one daughter, Brenda Roher; three sisters, Virginia Grasty, Beatrice Adams, Ethel Miller; and two brothers, Garland and Louis Lanier. Mrs. Mayo was a homemaker and member of the Shockoe Missionary Baptist Church, serving as a member of the Missionary society, Food Bank, Culinary staff, Sunday School, Bible study ministry and the Community Outreach Club. Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Helen Balthrop (Lin) of Washington, D.C., Edward Mayo (Elnora) of Bealton, Virginia, Ammie Brown of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Donald Mayo (Ann) of Blairs, Virginia, Gloria Taylor of Chatham, Virginia, and LaVerne Smith (Vincent) of Landover, Maryland; one son-in-law, Oscar Damon Roher of Blairs, Virginia; four sisters, Zella Logan, Dorothy Lanier, and Elaine Hunt, all of Danville, Virginia, and Evelyn Storm of Richmond, Virginia; four brothers, Leroy Lanier (Gloria) of Maryland, James Lanier of Richmond, Virginia, Alfred Lanier (Belle) of Danville, Virginia, and Walter Carter (Thelma) of Portsmouth, Virginia; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. A celebration of life for Mrs. Mayo will be conducted on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at 12 p.m. at the Shockoe Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Antonel A. Myler Sr., officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. A viewing will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019, at Miller Funeral Home from 4 until 7 p.m. with the family being present from 6 until 7 p.m. Miller Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of the arrangements.
