Mrs. Mildred V. Carter Beck, 91, of 701 Concord Road, Chatham, Virginia, departed this life on Tuesday morning, July 9, 2019, at her residence. Born on February 7, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late William Tanner Carter and Alease Leftwich Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Beck, Jr; one son, Lee Kennis Beck; her daughter, Vernice Loretta Beck Waller; five sisters, Beulah Robinson, Edith Robinson, Mary McElrath, Nina Tarpley and Mae Powell; and five brothers, James Linwood Carter, Ballard Carter, Walter Carter, John Carter, and William Carter Sr. Mrs. Beck was last employed at Lane Company and was a member of the Tarpley's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, serving as member of the usher board, nurses' unit, Missionary circle and senior choir. She was the last member of her immediate generation. Those left to cherish her memories are one daughter, Catherine Beck of Chatham, Virginia; two sons, James Beck (Ursula) of Baltimore, Maryland, and Orlander Beck of Hartford, Connecticut; two grandchildren whom she reared as her own, Monica Waller-Martin (Hampton) and Johnnie Waller Jr. (Tina), all of Danville, Virginia; five sisters-in-law, Connie Pritchett and Geneva Beck, both of Danville, Virginia, Marie Neal of Chatham, Virginia, Dassie Robertson of Burkesville, Virginia and Lelia Carter of Baltimore, Maryland; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Beck of Danville Virginia; one brother-in-law, Bobby Beck of Alexandria, Virginia, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A celebration of life for Mrs. Beck will be conducted on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Tarpley's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy L. Tarpley, officiating and the Rev. Robert L. Devins Jr., eulogist. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Miller Funeral Home from 4 until 7 p.m. Miller Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of the arrangements.
