Ernest Marion Barker, 91, of 1121 Double Creek Rd., Sutherlin, Va., died on Saturday, August 10, 2019, at Chatham Health and Rehab, after a decline in health for the past two years. Mr. Barker was born in Danville, Va., on March 22, 1928, a son of the late E. F. Barker and the late Bessie Ferrell Barker. He spent all of his life in the Laurel Grove Community of Pittsylvania County. He was a mechanic for the former Crane Tire Company where he was well known as a front-end alignment specialist. He was a member of the Laurel Grove Baptist Church where he served as deacon, trustee, and choir member. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who proudly served his country in the Korean War. He was a member of the Disabled Veterans. One of his favorite things was meeting with all his friends for coffee and conversation at Chasity's Café. He was married to Elaine Farmer Barker, who died on October 6, 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Sue B. Hair (Wayne), of Sutherlin, Va.; a loving granddaughter, Crystal Lewis (James); a grandson, Thomas Gatewood (Casey); four great-grandchildren, Shane Lewis, Brooke Lewis, Adam Gatewood, and Chase Gatewood; and a special friend, Mary Guill. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Phyllis B. Gatewood; and a granddaughter, Rachel Gatewood. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at 11 a.m. from the Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park with Military Honors by the U.S. Army and American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday night, August 12, 2019, from 6 until 7:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.
