A North Carolina man has been charged after a Westwood Middle School student was hit by a pickup truck when getting off a school bus Wednesday afternoon in Danville, authorities report.
It was about 2:30 p.m. when police said a Danville school bus came to a stop to unload students on Haynesworth Drive at the intersection of Elizabeth Street.
At the time, a 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling south on Elizabeth Street, police reported. David Maurice Durham, 81, of Durham, North Carolina, was the driver and the pickup was owned by Thompson Trucking in Concord.
The vehicle crossed over to the northbound side to get around the bus and hit the 12-year-old girl, police reported.
"Witnesses indicated that the warning lights were in operation at the time of the collision," the news release stated.
The girl was conscious at the scene and taken to Sovah Health-Danville for treatment. Police did not disclose the severity of the injuries.
