A 19-year-old city man was killed in a Tuesday night shooting in Danville, police report.
Multiple police cars lined the streets outside the Cardinal Village apartments after a shooting occurred early Tuesday night.
"It's one individual, shot in the chest," said Capt. E.K. Thompson of the Danville Police Department said at the scene. "They're being transported to Sovah Health."
Police later announced via a news release that Xavier N. Carson died as a result of his injuries.
His body will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
Police confirmed the shooting happened around 5:45 p.m.
Yellow police tape blocked off an area of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. Officers stood watch near each corner of the tape, keeping away a dozen bystanders spread out around the scene.
Many of these bystanders walked the dark streets and sidewalks of the apartment complex, talking to each other or to the police. Some remained in cars, inching along Edmonds Street while surveying the blue flashing lights and figures in bulletproof vests.
Each bystander, when asked to comment on what they saw or heard, refused — they either shook their heads and walked away or said they feared to talk.
"I'm not going to talk to you, because if it gets in the paper I'm going to get shot," one man said.
Police walked around with baton-length flashlights in hand as they waved bright beams of light along the grass, eyeing the ground beneath pants and shirts hanging from a clothes line.
The Danville Police Department and partners will conduct a what's known as a HEART Walk — Heal and Engage After Recent Trauma — at 11 a.m. Wednesday at 651 Cardinal Place. The group will meet at the community shelter.
