Pittsylvania County authorities report a 17-year-old shot a 25-year-old relative, who is a suspect in a breaking and entering in the Long Island community of Pittsylvania County on Saturday morning.
Deputies were called to the 700 block of Cedar Forest Road at about 11 a.m. Saturday for a report of someone being shot, according to a news release from Capt. Corey Webb of the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office.
When authorities arrived, they found 25-year-old Xavier Tyler Slayton with a gunshot wound. Police report Slayton "had broken into a residence that belonged to his mother" and he was shot by a 17-year-old, described only as a relative.
Slayton was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Webb reported. He was undergoing surgery at about 5 p.m.
The sheriff's office has obtained arrest warrants for Slayton on a charge a of breaking and entering with intent to commit murder. Charges have not been filed against the juvenile, but Webb reported the cause is still under investigation.
