Civil Air Patrol cadets joined Tunstall High School Junior ROTC cadets and Vice President Mike Pence onstage Thursday at the 75th anniversary of D-Day at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford. The cadet color guard being chosen to present the colors at the ceremony, then escort the vice president onstage. Col. David King, Tunstall High School JROTC leader who also directs the Civil Air Patrol program, coordinated the performance along with Tunstall drill expert Sgt. Maj. Bill Royal. King received a call indicating that the military color guard would be at Normandy on June 6 and requesting the Tunstall JROTC and Civil Air Patrol cadets color guard perform the ceremony in Bedford. At the request of officials in Washington, King located uniforms for the cadets that had been worn by soldiers from that era. The cadets, King and Royal went through the federal background checks before being cleared to perform. The Civil Air Patrol is the auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, and is headquartered at the Danville Regional Airport.
