Half of the roof was caved in, and mangled siding and roofing rested in the yard of the mobile home on the 1500 block of Mill-Stream Drive in Gretna, which was rendered a total loss after an early Monday morning blaze, said Pittsylvania County Fire Marshal Jeff Connor. The 911 call came in around 2 a.m., and members of five area fire departments — Gretna, Hurt, Renan, Cool Branch and Chatham — stayed on the scene for upward of three hours. Though nobody was hurt, the fire displaced nine people, who are being assisted by the American Red Cross. With many of the exterior walls stripped and burned off, the house’s interior was a charred mess with ashes, coals and chunks of insulation scattered about. Outside, a stuffed animal lay face down in the nearby grass next to a doll with ash peppering its jet black hair.
