Debra Holley, Danville Community College vice president of academic and student services, traded her day planner for a chef's hat last month after being selected as one of 20 semifinalists in the Sutter Home Build a Better Burger contest from 520 competitors nationwide. The 20 semifinalists competed in five groups of four contestants at locations across the country. On Aug. 28, she faced off against three other regional semifinalists in Detroit and, while she didn't emerge victorious, she did gain some new friends and may or may not have swapped a few recipes before returning to campus. Holley's entry was her bacon burger with braised kale, brie, and chocolate-cabernet sauce. She didn’t leave empty-handed, either: The pans, bowls and utensils provided in the competition were hers to keep. Each contestant had one hour to cook for the four judges and invited guests before the Detroit Tigers game that day. The winner from each regional semifinal competition will head to California’s Sutter Home Vineyards in October for the final cook-off, with the grand prize winner receiving $25,000.
