The Danville Optimist Club welcomed Jimmy Floyd, of Danville Parks and Recreations, to speak to the club’s meeting Aug. 13.

Floyd talked about the different programs the Optimist Club sponsors including the Optimist Youth Football League, Optimist Youth Basketball League and the Optimist Youth Cheerleading Squad.

Participation in youth sports in the city is declining, and Danville Parks and Recreation is trying to increase the number of children in its sports programs.

The Optimist Club motto is “Friend of Youth” and believes a way to help the community is by serving the youth.

The club meets at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Golden Corral in Danville.
