Coordinator of balanced literacy named for Danville schools
Marcie Murphy has been appointed as the coordinator of balanced literacy for Danville Public Schools.
She began her duties Monday.
Murphy has served in a variety of roles including principal, assistant principal and teacher during her 16 years of service in public schools in Virginia and Texas.
She graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2002 and the University of Phoenix with a Master of Arts degree in 2006.
She previously was principal of Patrick Springs Primary and Stuart Elementary School in Patrick County.
The coordinator of balanced literacy is responsible for designing and implementing professional development and instructional modeling activities to support teachers. This position serves as an additional instructional leadership resource for Danville Public Schools and is funded through federal funds designed to help primary students in reading.
Some duties will include:
» Provide professional development that improves the knowledge of teachers and campus leadership,
» Observe and coach teachers to provide specificity of balanced literacy instruction and reading intensive strategies,
» Provide content expertise to collaborative groups of teachers and administrators and
» Lead and assist Danville Public Schools in enhancing reading instruction for all students.
