Panthers drop conference opener

EDEN — Western Alamance wasted little time exacting its will on winless Morehead, and the Warriors kept the pressure on the way to a 44-6 blowout at Eden.

Donald Britt rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more in three quarters to lead the defending 3A State Champion Warriors to the win.

Morehead’s only touchdown came on a 55-yard sweep to A.J. Artis with 1:12 to play against mostly second stringers.

The Panthers (0-5) were led in rushing by Artis, who scampered those 55 yards down the Western Alamance sideline on his only carry. Glenn Wade carried 10 times for 42 yards, Tyson Scales handled it six times for 22 yards and Tony Strickland was fed the ball eight times for 12 yards.

Jawaan Winfield completed six-of-16 pass attempts for 74 yards and was picked off once.

Britt was deadly accurate for the Warriors, completing 11 of 14 attempts for 127 yards. Britt carried the ball seven times for 123 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown.

Billy Williamson, a shifty, darting rusher, carried the ball 17 times for 130 yards, including a 47 yard touchdown.

Western Alamance outgained the Panthers 412-183.

Morehead failed to convert on its only other scoring chance at the end of the first half. On a third-and-goal from the 14-yard line, Winfield’s pass to Kyre’ Keen was deflected away before Keen could get a grip as the half expired.
