Late goal lifts Averett women past Salem

A late goal by senior Kristen McCartney helped Averett defeat Salem College 3-2 in a non-conference women’s soccer game on Friday at the Cougar Den.
McCartney took a pass from senior Christy Urso and scored in the 81st minute to put the Cougars (7-1-1) ahead for good.
Averett grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Hillary Wood, a GW graduate, at the 11:32 mark. Salem (6-4) tied the game just before halftime on a Samantha Hubbard shot on a pass from Tori Collier. Freshman Karen Endresen put the Cougars ahead 2-1 early in the second half on a pass from Urso.
The Spirits tied the game at 2-2 on Kimberly Wisen’s penalty kick goal.
The Cougars return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they play at Methodist.
