DANVILLE — The Averett University women’s soccer team defeated Sweet Briar College 5-1 on Tuesday, extending the Cougars’ winning streak to four — a new school record.
Averett (4-1) outscored Sweet Briar 4-1 in the second half thanks to a goal and an assist from George Washington graduate and Averett freshman Hillary Wood. Freshman Karen Endresen had two goals on the contest, including one of Wood’s assist.
Averett scored the game’s first goal late in the first half when senior Kristen McCartney found freshman Karen Endresen, who powered a shot past Sweet Briar goalkeeper Lindsay Arnold.
The Cougars broke the game open midway through the second half. Endresen headed in a shot off the crossbar by Wood her second goal of the contest. A minute later, Wood put in the rebound off a kick by senior Christy Urso to put Averett up 3-1. Junior Meghan Cole found McCartney for Averett’s third goal in a span of two and a half minutes. Urso added another goal late for insurance.
Averett outshot Sweet Briar 24-7. Endresen and McCartney lead the team with three goals apiece this season. Averett returns to action on Friday against Greensboro College at 4 p.m. at the Cougar Den.
