Averett continued to make history, defeating Greensboro College 2-1 on Friday in Danville. The victory was the Cougars’ first against the Pride in 18 meetings and it improved their winning streak to a program-record five games in the process.
Averett (5-1, 1-0 USA South) broke a scoreless tie a little more than 15 minutes into the second half thanks to a misplay by Greensboro (2-4-1, 0-1 USA South). The Pride’s Katie Timmons headed a ball backward toward Greensboro’s goal and Averett senior Kristen pushed through two defenders to score past goalkeeper Katie Allegro.
Less than a minute later, GW graduate and Averett sophomore Hillary Wood put the Cougars ahead 2-0. McCartney lined a free kick in front of the goal, and after the ball was deflected to Allegro, she couldn’t maintain possession. As the ball rolled toward the right post, Wood punched it in.
Greensboro cut the Averett lead in half minutes later when Tessa Hall’s cross pass was put in by Cassie Shepherd.
Greensboro had a chance to tie the game in the waning minutes, but a point-blank shot went wide. Averett goalkeeper Samantha Lugo finished with 10 saves. McCartney and Wood increased their goal totals to four each this season.
Averett hosts Mary Baldwin College at 2 p.m. on Sept. 27.
