Averett defeated Meredith 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 and Mary Baldwin 25-17, 26-24, 25-13 on Friday night in Danville.
With Averett University and Meredith College tied 15-15 in the second set, the Cougars rattled off 10 straight points with junior Marie Keatts, a Tunstall graduate, serving to win the game. Averett used that momentum to sweep Meredith in three games Friday night at the Grant Center.
After Averett (7-14, 6-5 USA South) won the first game against Meredith 25-22, the Cougars and Avenging Angels had a back-and-forth battle. Meredith (7-14, 5-6 USA South) led 15-14 before Averett finished the set off for a 25-15 victory. The Cougars then held on for a 25-23 win in the final game to clinch the match.
Sophomore Shannon Andy led the Cougars with 12 kills, while senior Meredith Schwane added 18 digs.
Andy led the Cougars against Mary Baldwin (2-19, 2-8 USA South) with 10 kills and junior Jordan Maupin added 13 kills.
In between the Averett wins, Meredith defeated Mary Baldwin 18-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-22.
The Cougars return to action next Friday when they host Washington & Lee and LaGrange in the first day of the fifth annual Averett Invitational.
