Averett tied for seventh at O’Briant Memorial
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University’s men’s golf team sits in a three-way tie for seventh place after one round at the Tom & Bettie O’Briant Memorial tournament at Cardinal Golf and Country Club on Monday.
The Cougars fired off a round of 317, which put them in a tie with Roanoke College and Cape Fear Community College. Methodist University holds the lead after shooting a 299. Guilford College (302) was second, followed by Oglethorpe University (305), Rhodes College (308), LaGrange College (309) and Emory College (313).
Averett senior Brad Hartman shot a first-round 6-over-par 76, which tied him for the 12th best round of the day. Senior David Hess is tied for 15th after shooting a 77. Junior and GW grad Nathan Daly carded an 80, freshman and Dan River grad Travis Bowman finished with an 84 and junior Mark Rowland, a BY grad, shot an 85.
College women’s volleyball
Averett’s Jones named volleyball rookie of the week
Averett freshman setter Jesse Jones was selected as the USA South Conference Rookie of the Week for volleyball for the second consecutive week.
Jones helped the Cougars (13-18, 8-5 USA South) go 3-0 last week by averaging 11.0 assists a set and 2.7 digs a set. She had a week high of 38 assists against Methodist on Saturday. She also had 13 digs in that game.

Averett’s Huffman, Dixon earn conference’s weekly honors
Averett linebacker Mario Huffman was named the USA South Conference’s Defensive Rookie of the Week for the third time this season on Monday, while teammate Jeremy Dixon was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Huffman, a Tunstall grad and a junior playing his first season of collegiate football, had 14 total tackles in Averett’s 28-14 win over Greensboro College on Saturday. He also had one tackle for a loss and forced a fumble that led to an Averett (3-4, 2-2 USA South) score.
Dixon, a sophomore wide receiver, returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the first half against Greensboro. Dixon also had three catches for 26 yards.
