Averett in fifth place at Virginia State Championship
ASHLAND — Averett University is in fifth place after the first round of the Virginia State Championship at Hanover Country Club on Monday. Averett is six shots behind tournament leader Randolph-Macon College, which posted a 33-over-par 317.
Averett junior and former GW Eagle Nathan Daly shot a 7-over-par 78 in the first round, which puts him tied for sixth overall. Senior David Hess carded an 80, which puts him in a tie for 10th overall.

Averett’s Schwane named USA South defensive player of the week
Averett University senior libero Meredith Schwane was named the USA South conference defensive player of the week after his performances in the Averett Invitational. Schwane had 64 digs in the four games, including 25 against Virginia Wesleyan.
College football
Averett’s Robinson named USA South defensive player of the week
Averett University senior linebacker Clyde Robinson was named the USA South conference defensive player of the week after intercepting two Methodist passes in the Cougars’ victory on Saturday.
Robinson is the first Averett player to have two interceptions in a game since 2003.
