Averett baseball falls to N.C. Wesleyan in extra innings

DANVILLE — Justin Batts and Ted Williams each knocking in a run in the 10th inning as North Carolina Wesleyan defeated Averett University 6-4 on Sunday at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (12-18, 0-8 USA South) placed two runners on base in the bottom of the 10th but was unable to score. The Cougars, who had a pair of runners in scoring position with the game tied and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, stranded 16 runners in the loss.
Andrew Webb, pitching in relief, earned the win for N.C. Wesleyan (21-7-1, 7-3 USA South).
Adam Higgins and Jake Loye each belted three hits for Averett, while Ahmed Shelton gave up six hits, struck out four and allowed four earned runs in 9.1 innings on the mound.
