PALM COAST, Fla. — Reidsville’s Mike Goodes closed with a seven-over-par 79 Sunday and tied for 67th in the Ginn Championship at Hammock Beach Resort.
Goodes, who shot 74 and 76 in the first two rounds, collected a check for $2,625. It was his fourth start of the year on the Champions Tour and he now ranks 77th on the money list with $29,784.
Bernhard Langer, who shot 67-66-71, ran away to an eight-shot victory over Lonnie Nielsen, who posted 66-69-77.
The 77-man field battled a constant 25 mph wind with higher gusts on Sunday and the scores reflected the difficult conditions on the Ocean Course. The scoring average soared from 72.584 on Saturday to 76.571 on Sunday. That is the highest single-round scoring average this year on the Champions Tour, surpassing the previous high of 76.078 in the final round of the Turtle Bay Championship.
Goodes’ final round (39-40) included eight bogeys and one birdie.
The second-year pro has already qualified for this week’s Champions Tour event, the Cap Cana Championship in Santa Domingo, Domincan Republic. The 54-hole event, with a $2 million purse, begins Friday.
Goodes played in 10 events a year ago but didn’t make his first start until May.
