CHARLOTTESVILLE — Danville native J’Courtney Williams, who faces charges of credit card theft and credit card fraud, has been dismissed from the Virginia football team.
“J’Courtney’s time here has unfortunately been marked by issues which fall below the line of what is acceptable to us,” Virginia coach Al Groh said Wednesday in a released statement. “Therefore, he will no longer be a member of our program.”
Lt. Melissa Fielding of the university police said Tuesday that Williams, 19, was charged after police investigated a student’s report that his wallet was stolen at the Aquatics and Fitness Center. The theft charge is a felony, the fraud count a misdemeanor.
Williams, who was a redshirt freshman last season, also was arrested in February on a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession. That case has been continued until February 2009 in Albemarle General District Court.
Williams, who played high school ball at Christchurch School, has not been practicing with the team this spring because he is recovering from shoulder surgery.
