CLEMSON, S.C. (AP)—Clemson says football coach Tommy Bowden has stepped down.
A two-time Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year, Bowden just received a raise from Clemson last year. But his Tigers have struggled this season, falling to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC with last Thursday’s loss at Wake Forest.
Bowden, who came to Clemson in 1999 after leading Tulane to an 18-4 record in two seasons, never had a losing record with the Tigers. He finished with a 72-45 mark at Clemson, leaving him third on the school’s all-time coaching victories list.
Bowden will be replaced for the remainder of Clemson’s season by Dabo Swinney, the Tigers’ wide receivers coach.
