Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates yesterday said Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody has been nominated for the grade of general and assignment as the commander of the Army’s Materiel Command.
If confirmed by the Senate, she would be the first woman four-star general in American history.
Dunwoody was Fort Lee’s commanding general for 13 months until October 2005. She was the first woman to hold that post.
Dunwoody is currently the deputy commanding general/chief of staff for the Army’s Materiel Command.
“Women continue to achieve great success and make invaluable contributions to the defense of this nation,“ Gates said. “This is an historic occasion for the Department of Defense and I am proud to nominate Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoody for a fourth star.“
