Alcohol obsession

We would like to know why our Eden city business development manager is so consumed with getting alcohol on the streets of our town. He wants to amend the city ordinance to have beer gardens on city property, and to set tables on city sidewalks so wine and beer can be consumed on our public streets. (This part has been dropped from the amendment, but was a 4-3 vote in favor on Oct 21).
On Oct. 21, a 5-2 vote was needed on the first vote to have this ordinance in place; however, this did not take place and therefore will be voted on again Nov. 18. Donna Turner, Wayne Tuggle, Jerry Ellis and Jim Burnette voted to allow open alcohol on our streets. Chris Myott, Jerry Epps and Darrell Carter voted against it, and we commend you for your stand.
We feel, Mr. (Mike) Dougherty is trying to make the city council believe a vote against this would be a vote against Miller Brewing Co. They donate a lot of money to the community and are not behind this. We haven’t had any problems and do not need to stir it up. We all need to call each one of our council members and ask him/her to vote no. We need to stop this before it gets out of control.

Sawdust, I don’t know what the big deal is either. No one is forcing anyone to imbibe. I heard that it was illegal to consume alcohol on ones front porch in Danville. I don’t know whether it gets enforced.

Would someone please explain the difference between drinking beer in a beer garden and drinking a beer at home? The only difference I can see is the chance for some social intercourse, maybe seeing some friends you haven’t seen in a while. In other words, having a good time.
People who drink too much and then get behind the wheel of a car will do so regardless of where they get drunk. Those who are responsible will do likewise.
Alcohol is a fact of life. There is nothing wrong with having some wine or beer with a meal, and doing so increases the enjoyment of a meal for some, myself included. Not being able to serve alcohol with a meal, or not being allowed to have a beer garden, only costs restaurant owners to lose some business, as potential customers go to Danville or Greensboro for their meals.
Prohibition is a thing of the past. Refusing to acknowledge that fact will keep Eden in the 20th century.
