Uncle Sam’s spending is out of control

To the editor:
Unlike the editorial staff at the Danville Register & Bee, I admired U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode for not voting for the economic stimulus package without cuts in other parts of the federal budget to offset the expense.
So far in this fiscal year, which runs from October 2007 to October 2008, the expenditures of the federal government are $300 billion over revenue with six months to go. At this pace, the government will have to borrow at least $600 billion this year. The money for the stimulus package will be included in that. The annual budget deficit will be added to the federal debt, which recently hit $9.4 trillion.
The federal debt is similar to an individual with credit card debt. If an individual continues to borrow without paying down the debt and only pays interest to service the debt, the balance continues to grow. That is what is happening to the federal debt. They never pay down the debt, so it grows each year. The interest to service the debt is more than $400 billion and rising.
Congress is now working on a spending bill to bail out people who bought houses and have discovered they can’t make the mortgage payments, and also to bail out lenders who are holding the mortgages for those loans. It looks like Congress will borrow another $ 300 billion we can’t afford in order to help the people who borrowed money they couldn’t afford.
It seems that some in Congress are considering giving people a holiday from paying federal taxes on gasoline at the pump. The gas taxes are used to build and repair our federal bridges and highways. I seem to recall that after a major bridge collapsed in Minnesota, there was talk in Congress of raising the gasoline tax to pay for all the bridge and road repairs needed around the country. Well, it’s only money — they can always borrow hundreds of billions of dollars more.

Limits placed on speech and friends

To the editor:
I got an invitation to a young friend of my daughter’s graduation from Tunstall High School.
The only problem is we cannot go.
The graduate is allowed only 10 tickets for people to attend her graduation. Why does this have to be? It will be held on the football field, with plenty of room.
This is a major accomplishment and should not be limited to the number of people who can attend. Does the school limit the number of tickets each athlete can have for attendance at any given sporting event? There is no limit there, so why limit a graduation?
Graduates are also told to sign a contract that nobody will make any noise when their name is called. What are they going to do, withhold their diploma? It has taken 12 years for these students to get here, and most families have had more than 10 people involved in each child’s life. Is this for all of Pittsylvania County? What is next, no cheering at sporting events and a 10-person limit for each athlete?

I seriously debated whether I should reply to the ironically-named “Truth” comments, given that the dumbing down of discourse, inflamatory or venomous rhetoric to manipulate knee-jerk emotional reactions through misinformation, and pandering to the lowest common denominator to try to sway opinion to divert being wrong on facts or issues…well, that is part of what has caused the demise of our great nation, especially over the last two terms.  Although I cannot offer a complete education in the facts nor teach the commentor enough to overcome the neo-con propaganda brainwashing, I think I can offer a few useful insights to anyone else who happens to view the page, as well as maybe even ignite a light bulb for this clearly lost soul.  First, even fallacy-ridden far right “whackos” (to use the commentators oh-so-eloquent phrasing) like Ann Coulter have remarked that Clinton was a fiscal conservative as a consequence of not only programs like welfare reform, but more significantly, the budget was balanced and we actually had a surplus, and subsequently, a booming economy.  Again, I reiterate that spending being out of control IS a problem, it is the hypocricy of those who state that then vote the opposite to trick the ignorant or ill-informed, malleable voters, that I take issue with.  I don’t know how on Earth anyone could deduce from my comments that I would want more illegal aliens!  Quite the contrary, for the literate, you can read that I was pointing out the duplicity of those who CLAIM to be against illegal immigration while getting their palms greased by the very companies cited for hiring them! For if you hire them, they will continue to come! I don’t know whether to find the comment about wanting more illegal immigrants funny, or rather frightening about the state of our public school system. I guess intelligence brands one as an “elitist” in some people’s eyes, but really, when did intelligence, or even common sense and facts, become a liability?  The comments displayed as much ignorance about the Islamic faith as our Congressman has displayed, and as far as those who “love the Saudi’s”—GEORGE BUSH!!!!!!  Unfortunately, they don’t love him anymore so they wouldn’t accept his recent plea to increase production to lower outrageous gas prices.  Too bad, as that is one time we could have used his efforts to pad the bank accounts of the oil industry for some common good.  In regard to Clinton and terrorism, in the traditional meeting that takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming, Clinton stressed to Bush that al-Quida should be top priority, and was in urgent need of attention.  Bush disagreed.  Bush ignored the intelligence memo’s stating that bin Laden “determined to attack inside the U.S. with planes” and didn’t ensure enough arabic translators to decode wiretapped calls that could have prevented September 11, for those of us who remember poor Condi Rice’s testimony (how someone of her superb intelligence can be overruled consistently by the other mediocre minds in the Administration, and then to have tow their line and be a fall guy for them…well, its just sad).  The myopic attitude toward Africa, along with misinformation and a blatant twisting of facts, added to letting them “Die Out” is heart-breaking to those of us who believe human life has value and trust in the teachings of the Prince of Peace regarding what is good and ethical (love thy neighbor; spec in someone else’s eye while you have a log in your own; just a few that come to mind).  So since asked how I could not think Goode was a good man, well, because I have in fact read the constitution, and the Bible.  If the concept of Jesus as God is offensive to you, as I suspect it might be, you might try the Unitarian Universalist Jefferson Bible, produced by founding father Thomas Jefferson to digest the New Testament into just the basic teachings, message, and ethics of Jesus into a form that you may find more palitable.  But since you asked what kind of “leftist” or “socialist” I am…well, I actually worked as a republican for the republican party on Capital Hill, but like the Goldwater-conservative, high placed official under the elder Bush who subsequently wrote “Invasion of the Party Snatchers,“ I became seriously disturbed by the corrupting of sound conservative principles by oligarical, fascist interests intent on destroying America, and the sheer evil of neo-cons aimed at duping people into voting against their own interests and the nation’s good to profit the select few.  They’ve done a job, too:  fewer manufacturing jobs than at any point since the industrial revolution, terrorism and world hatred of the U.S. expanding exponentially, our ally Israel far less secure, all but the top 10% seeing their standard of living significantly decline, huge tax cuts for shutting down an American plant and moving it overseas to sweat shops in places like China as they also hold more and more notes on our debt, a sagging and disappearing middle class while poverty ranks are burgeoning, record foreclosures and bankrupt Americans, with health care and job loss the primary culprits, etc., etc.  Take back the GOP from those like Goode and Bush and return it to decent human beings like our Senior Senator from Virginia, or Lindsey Graham, and we might have some hope of salvaging the great American experiment before we fall like so many civilizations before us.  Just scan the Zeitgeist, compare it to the fall of other empires, look at Goode’s record compared to what he SAYS he stands for and who funds his campaigns, and even YOU might vote for Perriello, even though he’s a Democrat and not registered with the VA Bar (as a message to say we’re taking back the GOP by taking it away from those who have destroyed it and our nation; give us authentic conservatives, then they’ll get the votes)!  But in terms of social programs, there is one I just love, and highly recommend:  The public library.  Read a book.  You might be surprised how enjoyable it can be!  One I might suggest, that would be helpful in terms of Africa and the developing world and what the U.S. corporate interests in tag team with the CIA and military and leadership have done (to understand terrorism, the environmental plight, world hatred of the U.S., why they are shipping our jobs to sweat shops, etc.), “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man.“  Perkins is the author.  Should be able to pick up a copy at B. Dalton in town, if you prefer the good ol’ modified-capitalist route.  I’ll say a prayer for you “Truth” that you find real Truth before its too late.  May God bless you with enlightenment.  Peace!

Fiscal conservatism of Clinton? What kind of bull is that. clinton is the reason we are having problems with terrorists. Wtc 93 and the Cole. What kind of left winger would think that Goode is not doing a good job and want more illegals in this country? Just another liberal elitist who wants more socialism. It is a Govt of the people. Not a govt of the welfare state so get a job, read the Constitution and put your Manefesto away. Virgil Goode is a good man and not a Whacko like Perillo who does not think enough of VA to be a member of the bar. But he is one in New York. As far as aid to Africa to hell with them. Any group that condones the RAPE of women can rot and die out. Muslims do this to. What about the women and man in Saudi who were both raped and the Govt there wanted to lash her 200 times since she was not with a relative. You liberals love these folks go live with them.

I am all for staying within our means as we did well under the Democratic and FISCAL CONSERVATIVE President Clinton.  Yet, some hypocrites in the once fiscally conservative Republican party, who have been captured by fascists and neo-cons, are only for “staying within our means” when it comes to helping the ailing common man in America.  They seem to have no problem spending 12 million AN HOUR in Iraq (3 trillion before Bush leaves office) when there is a diplomatic means out of that mess which can never be completely resolved through on-going military action; huge corporate bailouts or padding the bank accounts of the select few; or tax cuts for shutting down American plants and moving them to sweat shops in overseas markets like China (so we can borrow more money from her!), then giving the same wealthy investors that left hard working Americans in the unemployment lines in doing so generous, substantially lower tax rates than middle class citizens!  Goode seems to have no problem on Appropriations giving a hefty sum to that PALACE of a courthouse in Henry County while the officers are indicted on racketeering for dealing guns and drugs out of the evidence room, but then votes against health care for poor children 5 times!  Social programs can be a wise investment, such as in reducing crime, public education, Pell Grants, and student loans.  The GI Bill after WW II spawned a generation of higher educated and thus higher paid Americans, filling IRS coffers, growing the GNP, fostering technological advancements, creating a burgeoning middle class…paying for itself many times over!  Goode wants to cut foreign aid, but we must remember the African continent is 40% Muslim (Osama got his start in the Sudan), and given a history of greedy, puppeteering interests fostering much of the African violence and social injustice, we can do just that and breed another generation of international terrorists!  Smart move!  Or cut aid to the arts?  Didn’t sing that tune with the North Theatre.  Goode’s so sacred of illegal immigrants he decries display of Mexican flag outside ethnic restaurant, but last election cycle accepted a nice chunk of change for his campaign from a company charged with hiring illegal immigrants (who just got a slap on the wrist).  Really, folks, trickle down has been discredited by all respected major economists; abudance must surge upward to revitalize ailing America—just as it did with the GI Bill after WW II.  (And while I applaud Goode’s commitment to furthering the current GI Bill, it shouldn’t take the urging of his congressional opponent to get him to do so!)  The distinguished “Gingrich-word-list and Neo-con Propaganda School of Economics” keeps duping the public.  Just look at who contributes to the campaigns, where the money they appropriate goes, and voting records compared to what they SAY they stand for…FRIGHTENING!  But, that’s education:  suffer into wisdom.  Ringggggg, Ringggggg…this is your courtesy wake-up call.  Have a nice day.
