Impeach Bush and Cheney
To the editor:
Most congressmen have done very little to support their oath of office, “to support and defend the U.S. Constitution.”
They have done nothing to oppose a president who continually grabs and claims powers not delegated to his office by the Constitution. They have remained silent in the face of the White House lies and corruptions; thus they are also their lies and corruptions!
The most important action Congress should take is to impeach President Bush and the Vice President Cheney before they leave office. The capitol mood (among Democrats and Republicans) is obviously irresponsible patience — “just wait until Jan. 20 and we will be rid of him!”
This may be true, but we will not be rid of all the corrupt, unconstitutional and dictatorial precedents he has set, including the Nazi-type “enabling legislation” in the so-called “Patriot Act.” Only impeachment can remove the corrupt unconstitutional precedents he has set.
All of this will still be in place for the next corrupt president with dictatorial aspirations to claim and use against the American people.
The fact that U.S. Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Walter Jones of North Carolina — two of the three Republican congressmen with the integrity and courage to oppose the dictatorial corruptions of this administration — were, in their primary elections, easily re-elected should tell you something!
Our battle cry, if you have not heard it, is “Impeach Bush now before he leaves office, or come November throw the incumbents out (Democrats and Republicans)!”

Lots of talent out there
To the editor:
Danville and Pittsylvania County are reaping the benefits of electing smart, honest, hard-working and successful statesmen. I refer, of course, to former Gov. Mark Warner, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and Sen. Jim Webb.
Warner aspired many years ago to be a successful businessman. He took $5,000 of borrowed money and went into the wireless communication field, where he amassed a fortune! Then, as state chairman of the almost-defunct Democratic Party, he built an intelligent and caring group of people who followed his lead and helped him leap into the governor’s office.
The financial surplus Warner left was just one of the reasons Virginia was deemed to be the best governed state of our union at that time. His 72 percent approval rating when he left office demonstrated how the voters of Virginia felt for this unusual man. Be sure to vote for him to become our next U.S. Senator. You will see a truly bright hope for our government to accomplish great things.
Gov. Kaine has visited our area many, many times. He has brought economic hope with badly needed new industries that are paying decent wages. When in Danville to officially open the Swedwood factory on May 21, he said we picked up our heads and vigorously pushed to counter the loss of so many jobs. Danville and Pittsylvania County’s cooperation was the envy of not only other parts of our commonwealth, but of the nation.
Kaine will leave office with a history of having kept his campaign promises — and then some — particularly in “our neck of the woods.” Hopefully, his plan for transportation will be embraced by our Legislature. It is imperative that we take care of our roads and bridges.
Webb’s victory in 2006 put Congress a step closer to avoiding the gridlock our federal government has experienced in the recent past.
As soon as Webb was sworn in, I wrote him pleading for the GI Bill of World War II to be initiated as a partial pay-back to our military men and women. That GI Bill sent many young people (including me) to college. As a group, we became successful taxpayers. Our country financially reaped much more than was paid out under the provisions of that legislation!
Webb sent me a long letter explaining that he had, along with Republican Sen. John Warner, introduced a GI Bill that comes close to the one passed during World War II. Let’s hope a good version of the bill passes both houses of Congress!
Webb has diverse experiences that personify his abilities to lead our country into a wonderfully successful future. He served in the Vietnam War and was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Navy Cross for outstanding leadership and bravery, and he has also served as Secretary of the Navy. If there was ever a truly qualified person to lead our country, Webb is the personification of those attributes.
Virginia is on the verge of having two outstanding U.S. Senators!

Democrats can win a war
To the editor:
Who will it be, Obama or McCain? The barbs are beginning to fly now. It’s getting to be like a Hollywood movie. I can’t wait until the next day to see what the score is. The war in Iraq seems to be the main issue. Rush Limbaugh says the Democrats don’t know how to win a war. Has he ever heard of Franklin Roosevelt, who won the biggest war that America ever fought? Roosevelt knocked out Germany and Japan in less than four years.
Pat Buchanan said Winston Churchill was the cause of that war by declaring war on Germany when they invaded Poland, but Britain had a pact with Poland, what else could it do? They did the right thing. I remember it well. It came over the radio one Sunday morning. I was 13 years old and I saw my mother crying. She remembered World War I just 21 years earlier. My father’s brother, Harry, served in the trenches for Britain and died from his wounds and being gassed a few years after the war ended. My father gave me Harry’s name.
If Churchill did cause that war, it prevented more killing of the Jews of Europe. Hitler blamed the Jews for losing World War I. I believe that but for the United States and Great Britain, Hitler would have murdered every Jew in Europe and he would have not stopped there.
That was a long time ago — gone but not forgotten. This war in Iraq needs to come to an end. It is more like a war between people, not a war between countries. The sooner it’s over, the better for everyone. There could be more serious problems ahead — the economy for one.

Wilson for city treasurer
To the editor:
I would like to express my support for Jackie D. Wilson for the position of city treasurer.
I have known Jackie and his family for about 40 years. His impeccable values include Christianity, honesty and family values. It is my opinion that these values are incorporated in both his work and personal life.
I have no doubt in my mind that Jackie, if elected, would do the city a great service in this position. He would look at issues from all sides and make his decisions based on the city’s best interests and economic feasibility.
Jackie definitely has the experience to fill this position. He is always looking for ways to improve himself. I know that when we were younger, we made the joke that Jackie was a professional student, always taking some kind of class to better his education until he could complete his degree. He is a firm believer in a good education along with his wife, Marty, who has contributed her expertise to teaching for 34 years.
I would like to take this opportunity to urge the public to vote for Jackie Wilson for city treasurer.
