Some folks don’t get parking tickets

To the editor:

I’ll second the letter, “How about free parking?” (July 18, page A8). Three other ladies and myself go to Coffee Emporium once a week for coffee. A few months ago, I parked my car on the street with my back tire on the curb a little bit. The ticker-giver came along marking tires and gave me a $10 ticket. I paid the ticket and forgot about it.

I was at the coffee shop on June 18 when the ticket-giver came along marking tires. A Mercedes-Benz that was parked behind me had its front tire on the curb. The ticket-giver did not give this person a ticket. I know why I got a ticket, but I don’t know why they did not get a ticket. Somebody wasn’t doing their job. Thank you for your time.

Political candidates don’t need bright TV lights to visit hospitalized troops

To the editor:

I could not help but notice how the front page of Saturday’s paper was dedicated to Sen. Barack Obama, (“Danville native ‘awestruck’ at meeting Obama in Iraq,” July 26, page A1).

It should not be any surprise that someone from our area would be serving in Iraq. This area has had a long heritage of brave men and women serving in the military. However, had this lucky soldier been in the hospital in Germany, he would not have been so fortunate. Obama skipped the visit, saying he did not want his visit politicized. He could have went without his thralls of press, but decided to skip the visit anyway. No major video meant less coverage, which is what he is all about. His rock star image would not be large enough with just a still camera taking pictures.

It is obvious that Obama is less than sincere when it comes to our men and women in uniform. If he does not think enough of them to visit the hospital, then this cowardly rock star does not deserve to be president. And to think that I thought Hillary was worse.

Goode has stood up for our values

To the editor:

Thanks for standing up for Southside Virginia’s values, Virgil.

Liberals criticized you for voting against the new G.I. Bill because it raised taxes on small businesses. Congress came around to your position. We now have a new G.I. Bill that has better education benefits and no new taxes.

Liberals criticized you for several years for calling for more oil and natural gas drilling in the United States while alternative energy sources — such as switch grass — are developed.

Now the majority of Americans support this position.

Liberals criticized you when you fought amnesty for illegal aliens. The amnesty provision was dropped from the immigration bill.

Liberal criticized your calling for a fence to be built on our Southern border to reduce illegal immigration and drug and gun running. The fence is now being built.

This is why we elected Virgil Goode to Congress — to carry the values of Southside Virginia to Washington. Thank you, Virgil, for keeping true to us.
