Fire marshal cautions residents operating heating equipment
Heating equipment is listed as the second leading cause of home fires across the nation. From December through February, however, it rises to the rank of No. 1. Fire Marshal Robert Cardwell reports 10 house fires in Rockingham County during November, most due to misuse of winter heating equipment.
Undefeated Rams just one win away from state championship game
For the seventh straight year, the Reidsville Rams will be playing for a shot at a NCHSAA state championship when they host Forest Hills tonight at Community Stadium. Reidsville, winners of 30 straight games, takes its 14-0 record into action against the 11-3 Yellow Jackets.
Wake Forest law school introduces innocence clinic
The interdisciplinary course begins in the spring semester of 2009. Students will then apply their knowledge to actual cases by reviewing and investigating claims of innocence by inmates and, where appropriate, pursue legal avenues for exoneration and release from prison.

Morehead Memorial Hospital’s Smith-Michael Cancer Center has been granted a three-year accreditation with commendation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

The Federal Communications Commission has granted Star News Corporation, owners of WGSR Channel 39 in Reidsville, a construction permit to begin broadcasting a digital signal in 2009, a news release said.
Rockingham food banks get boost
Tuesday morning, United Way of Rockingham County Executive Director Rick Hurley and Sheriff Sam Page presented a $5,000 check to Bobbie Seagraves, executive director of the local ARC chapter. The check was made possible by an emergency fund that United Way established to help in critical times, such as during natural disasters or economic downturns.

Hanesbrands plans earlier closing of Eden plant
Hanesbrands spokesman Matt Hall told WXII-TV in Winston-Salem on Tuesday that its plant in Eden will close by mid-February. It had been slated to close by the end of next summer. The plant is the company’s last large knit-fabric textile plant in the U.S.
Rockingham reports no fatalities over holiday weekend
The holiday travel weekend was mostly quiet in Rockingham County, the Highway Patrol said.
Second man wanted in Eden shooting
Alphonza Saran Mabry, 21, is wanted on a charge of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Carlos Lester on Nov. 26.
Mabry is considered armed and dangerous, police said. Anyone with information concerning Mabry is asked to call Eden Detective Paul Moore at 623-9755.
Group supports Rockingham libraries with volunteer hours, fundraising efforts
The Friends have played an integral part in providing financial and other assistance to the libraries in Madison, Mayodan and Stoneville for more than a decade. For many years, the group sponsored annual or semi-annual used book sales at various locations. Two years ago, they consolidated those efforts into a storefront in Mayodan, where they could offer donated books on a year-round basis.
Rockingham fire department gets grant
The Northwest Rockingham County Fire Protection Association has received a $23,592 grant through the 2008 Volunteer Fire Department Fund.
The check will be mailed to Chief James L. Lawrence to be used by the department to
buy needed equipment.

Rockingham Co. Salvation Army aid to fall short
Some parents don’t have the money to buy gifts for their children this Christmas. That’s where The Salvation Army steps in. But The Salvation Army of Rockingham County has 900 angels that haven’t been adopted, and that could mean some children won’t receive a Christmas gift.
Eden appoints a new attorney
Erin Burnette Gilley replaces Tom Medlin, with whom she currently works; she is the daughter of City Councilman Jim Burnette, who declined to vote at Monday’s called meeting.
Reidsville police investigating theft
Norman Holt, of 523 Barnes St. in Reidsville, discovered six steel pipes and a muffler missing from his backyard at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Holt reported the crime to the Reidsville Police Department about 15 minutes later.
