The Reidsville City Council has passed a resolution of support for the quarter-cent sales tax proposal to benefit the Rockingham County schools. The resolution was passed at a special council meeting Wednesday morning.
“I think it’s important that we put all our efforts into assisting in the educational process,” said Mayor James Festerman. He said Reidsville High School, in particular, has issues that need to be addressed.
“There are some safety issues, and it’s difficult to control from a security standpoint because there are so many entrances,” said Festerman. “The main campus needs to be rebuilt.”
Festerman said a new building design for Reidsville High School would take into account security and safety issues, such as the building’s ability to withstand severe weather. He believes the quarter-cent sales tax will address the problems at Reidsville High School and make the school a better place to learn.
The school board believes the quarter-cent sales tax would make it possible to begin all school construction projects in the next few years. The schools listed as priorities for renovation include Douglass and Draper Elementary schools in Eden, Stoneville Elementary and Reidsville High.
