LINVILLE FALLS, N.C. (AP) — Fire crews plan to burn about 1,200 acres near a wildfire in western North Carolina to limit damage from the blaze.
The Asheville Citizens Times reported Wednesday that fire team spokesman Eric Mosley says the Sunrise fire has burned about 740 acres and is about 50 percent contained.
Mosley says weather conditions improved Tuesday, with cloud cover and higher humidity.
The blaze is about 15 miles north of Marion off U.S. 221.
Deborah Walker with the Forest Service says firefighters hope to contain the blaze along the Linville Gorge Wilderness.
Crews plan to begin burning 1,200 acres identified as potential fuel, starting Thursday.
Mosley says that will allow fire fighters to be confident the blaze won’t flare up again when the fire is extinguished.
