The deadline for the Courthouse Sculpture Fundraiser has been extended until Oct. 31. Wilson and Berger are co-chairs of the Sculpture Fundraiser Committee, which has been raising money for brick sculptures by Brad Spencer for the front of the new Judicial Center, which is set to open in 2011.
The main reason for extending the deadline is the number of festivals and other events coming up throughout October, according to a news release.
“We wanted to take advantage of opportunities such as Riverfest in Eden and the upcoming Fall Festival in downtown Reidsville,” said coordinator Jodie Berger. “Laurie (Wilson) and I were already at Riverfest and thought it was too good to miss.”
The majority of money has been raised through sales of brick pavers to be placed near the front entrance of the Judicial Center. Organizers say $40,000 has been raised. The goal of $60,000 includes two outside sculptures and a figure of Lady Justice in the front lobby.
Committee members have been surprised at the inventive ways pavers have been used, the release said. Families bought $500 bricks engraved with all family members’ names, relatives of current and former county officials honored their service to county residents, families purchased pavers as birthday or Father’s Day gifts and public schools held fundraisers or staff pitched in to purchase pavers for their schools. Moseley Inc, project architect, bought two pavers, one for the Courthouse entrance and one for the entrance to the jail.
