Supporters of the YWCA exercised their desire to reopen the building through a candlelight walk Monday evening through downtown.

About 15 walkers hiked from the YWCA’s building on Main Street to Memorial Drive. Councilman Buddy Rawley told them that their work isn’t going unnoticed in the community.

“It takes organizations like this to make the community much better,” he said.

Organization officials are about $35,000 shy of their $150,000 goal to reopen the facility, which closed in late 2006 and was put up for sale because of financial problems.

Those hoping to rekindle the organization, which offered exercise classes and social programs for women, need to raise the money by the end of October to be successful.

Nancy Jiranek, president of the YWCA’s board of directors, said each event supporters hold gives the effort more attention in the community.

“We’re pleased because each event makes a big difference,” she said.

Joan Scruggs said she took part because she wanted to help.

“We’ve needed it back for several years,” Scruggs said.

Sandy Saunders, former YWCA president, has worn many hats within the organization over the years and also came out to support Monday’s event. “I believe in the mission of the YWCA,” she said.
