United Steel Workers Union Local 831 Monday officially announced its support of congressional candidate Tom Perriello.
“We stick with those people who fight for us, who represent the voice of the working people,” said Byron Taylor, chairman of the Committee on Public Education.
Union President Danny Barber presented Perriello with a $5,000 check.
“I plan on working as hard up there as you all do for your families,” Perriello said, thanking those present and acknowledging the work that went into his endorsement.
About half a dozen union members in attendance agreed that in office sitting Congressman Virgil Goode has only voted “right with us on trade,” but erred in voting against the 2008 tax rebate stimulus, a number of veteran-related bills including the 2008 bill pioneered by Jim Webb (D-Va.), and most recently the Paycheck Fairness Act.
Between 90 and 95 percent of the 2,300 union members are Virginia residents, said Barber.
“Tom is just a breath of fresh air,” he added.
