Tony Stewart will leave Joe Gibbs’ NASCAR race team at the end of this season and will become co-owner and driver for Haas/CNC Racing next year, according to ESPN.com.
According to the Web site, sources close to Stewart confirmed that he has been granted a release from Gibbs racing.
Stewart is one of NASCAR’s superstars, fifth among active drivers with 32 career victories. However, he has not won this season and has been overshadowed at Gibbs Racing by teammate Kyle Bush.
ESPN.com reports that Stewart will announce his departure from Gibbs today, and tomorrow he will formally announce his move to the Haas/CNC team tomorrow at Chicagoland Speedway.
The report says Stewart’s deal is expected to make him the highest-paid driver in NASCAR and 50 percent owner of Haas/CNC Racing.
