DANVILLE — Rumors that Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has laid off workers in Danville are not true, according to Ed Markey, the company’s corporate spokesman.

Markey said the Danville plant is closed this week for a scheduled shutdown and will reopen next week. He said the shutdown was announced during the second quarter conference call. The closure is part of a move to reduce the company’s overall tire production, Markey said.

Goodyear is Danville’s largest employer with 2,400 workers.
