People started showing up at Ross Dress for Less at about 9 a.m. Saturday, eagerly awaiting the ribbon-cutting at the latest store to open in Coleman MarketPlace.
Debbie Dunavant had driven from the town of Halifax for the opening of one of her favorite stores.
“I go to the one in Lynchburg a lot,” she said. “I’m really happy there’s one here now.”
Frances Stephens, of Danville, agreed with Dunavant, saying she was happy to have a Ross closer to home.
The store is the latest to open in the 900-strong chain, according to district manager Eddie Egerton, who invited the crowd into the store to search for “treasures” among the name-brand merchandise priced 20- to 60-percent less than manufacturers’ suggested retail prices.
Laurie Moran, president of the Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce, cut the ribbon, and told the crowd that with all the “doom and gloom” in the news, it was good to have positive news.
“This is an exciting day in Danville and the region,” Moran said, thanking Egerton for opening the store here.
Miss Danville-Pittsylvania County 2009 Lindsay Bowman was also on hand for the ribbon-cutting — and to do some shopping.
“They have a lot of shoes,” she said with a smile. “Shoes are my weakness; I’m buying some today.”
Coleman MarketPlace is filling up — besides Ross, stores already open are Target, Home Depot, Petco, Old Navy, Marshalls, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lifeway Christian Center, Rue 21, Sally Beauty Supply and Verizon Wireless.
One of the storefronts has a sign that says H&R Block is “coming soon,” and an interior upfit building permit has been filed for Hollywood Nails.
News on restaurant openings is sketchy at this time — Sonic has opened and is packed just about any time you drive by, but so far the only clues about other eateries are signs saying Golden Corral and San Marcos are “coming soon.”
North American Properties, who developed the center, will be holding its official grand opening for Coleman MarketPlace next Saturday, Oct. 18.
Details have not yet been released, but shoppers are encouraged to be there early to fill out entries for a $1,000 shopping spree. The drawing will reportedly take place at 1 p.m.
