Chief Philip A. Broadfoot, Danville Police Department, will hold a news conference at 3:00 PM to address the shooting early Saturday morning on Slayton Avenue and the police response to it.
For reference, police were dispatched to the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research at 1:34 AM on Saturday, May 10 for a report of a man with a gun. The Institute’s facilities had been rented out for a birthday party. When police officers arrived, they observed Melvin Wayne Smith shoot another man three times and run away. Cpl. McCormick and Officer Sossoman (who had been on the job for only a week) gave chase, confronted the suspect, and made the arrest. The officers were justified in using deadly force several times during the event, but did not and were able to take the suspect into custody without injury.

How many times does Melvin Smith have to shoot or shoot at people before he’s locked up for a long time? He was my neighbor several years ago and he shot at a guy then but missed.I moved away but I know this man is a danger to others and should not be allowed back on the streets to harm some other innocent person.
