Ted Maurakis was laid off from his job at Columbia Flooring five months ago. He applied for numerous jobs at several new companies opening in Danville, but received no takers.
So, Maurakis decided to become his own entrepreneur. He reopened the Royal Palms Restaurant last week and named it Theo’s – his name in Greek – and hired five people.
“We specialize in Greek-American food,” Maurakis said. “The Greek-styled chicken is popular — especially due to spanakopita made by Lillian Pappas. I’m selling it every day. That way, our customers can get primed for the Greek Food Fest next year.”
Customers say they like what they see.
Ben Kammerman said he is fond of Theo’s fried chicken and chicken tenders because of his diet.
“Very good. Very good,” Kammerman said.
His son, Matt, has 13 years of experience as a chef. He said the food Maurakis is serving is first-rate.
“I think it’s very superior,” Matt Kammerman said. “I like the cheeseburgers and reubens. They’re great.”
Delivery will be offered to downtown locations, Danville Regional Medical Center, CIT and the Ballou Park area.
Maurakis said orders can be called or faxed in. 621 Main St., phone: 791-3880, fax: 791-4544
Theo’s is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is a smoke-free establishment. Maurakis said customers will be able to enjoy their food better if there’s no smoking.
He said city officials have been helping with the opening of Theo’s, by telling downtown stores and businesses that the restaurant is open and promoting the new restaurant on the city cable access channel.
