If the lines stretching outside the door of the payment office of the Charles H. Harris Financial Service Center are any indication, most Danville residents are paying their property and real estate taxes on time.
With both bills due today, the city’s Central Collections Division has had a busy week.
For the employees, though, it’s been easier this year than last because the new computer system is completely on line.
“We used to have different lines for different payments,” Jeanne Scott, supervisor of Central Collections said Thursday. “Now, (every cashier) does everything, and it has gone smoother.”
Scott said she does expect the office to be busy today.
Barbara Dameron, the city’s finance director, said the economy does not appear to have had an affect on the amount being collected so far. As of 3 p.m. Thursday, she said, the city had already collected $5.8 million of the $7.75 million due in real estate taxes and $2.2 million of the $2.7 million due in property taxes.
“I expect to make our budget for the year,” Dameron said.

They will get a letter in the mail of forclosuer but I do know they can make arrangements with the city to make payments per month if they can’t pay it all.

I wonder if the city will do anything to collect the past due taxes from those scofflaws who simply refuse to pay?
