Teaming up with the League of Conservation Voters, the Virginia Organizing Project is delivering savings to some Danville residents’ doors.

Going door to door, VOP members are distributing compact fluorescent light bulbs to low-income households. On Wednesday, they unloaded a few dozen of the energy-saving and cost-saving fixtures to residents of the College Park Apartments.

Members of VOP also are passing out fliers with instructions on the proper way to dispose of the bulbs. Because of the mercury in them, they require a specific clean-up process.

According to the packaging, one of the twisty light bulbs is supposed to last nine years and each one should save about $46 in utility costs.
