Green Rock Correctional Center in Chatham held its first graduation for inmates on Friday, with 65 earning high school equivalency certificates through general education development testing and nine earning certification in computer-aided drafting.

This was the first graduation at Green Rock, one of Virginia’s newest prisons, which opened in 2007.

Win Sisson, a spokesman for the education division of the Department of Corrections, said the state’s prisons have offered educational programs for inmates for 100 years.

Sisson said the educational programs often open doors for the inmates.
