Danville Community College’s class of 2008 lined up, 532 strong, to be presented with their degrees, certificates and diplomas Friday night.
“This is the largest class we’ve ever had,” said Carlyle Ramsey, DCC’s president.
Some earned certificates in one of 14 different programs, ranging from auto body mechanics, to child care, to office information processing. Others earned diplomas in eight fields, including practical nursing and industrial electrical-electronic equipment servicing.
There was even a group of high school students who were dual-enrollees, earning their high school diplomas while earning enough college credits for first-year studies certificates or two-year associate degrees.
Most of the students who graduated had earned associate degrees, either in applied science or arts and sciences.
The commencement speaker was U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, who drew applause when he said, “DCC, in my opinion, is one of the best community colleges, not just in Virginia, but in the country.
“The reason is simple: you have a great leader in Dr. Ramsey; outstanding staff; you have the commitment of students, parents and faculty to work together.
“We have training programs and facilities here to focus on businesses that are in this area and on new businesses and to train you, the graduates, to meet those needs so that you can get jobs right here in Southside Virginia.”
Four students and one professor were presented with special recognition at the graduation ceremony held on the college’s campus.
Michelle Verdi, of Danville, and Timothy Pierce Jr., of Gretna, were recognized for their selection to the All-Virginia Academic Team, sponsored by USA Today, the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year college students.
Angela Michelle Edmonds, of Danville, was honored for winning first place district and state awards in the precision machining category at the SkillsUSA competition. She will represent the state at the national competition in June.
Patricia Hancock, of Nathalie, was presented with the Stephanie L. Ferguson Medallion of Courage as recognition of her dedication to completing a program of study despite adverse circumstances.
David Balfour, associate professor of biology, received the Student Government Association’s Teacher of the Year award.
He was cited for his dedication, concern for students and professionalism.
